C4 is probably the most recognisable pre-workout name there is, and Cellucor sells it in a dozen different versions. Original and Ultimate are the two most people end up choosing between. One is the classic, lighter scoop. The other is the full-strength, stacked-up version.
We went through both formulas ingredient by ingredient and scored them on energy, focus, pumps and performance. Here's how they compare, and which one actually deserves your money.
C4 Ultimate is the better pre-workout. At a standard one-scoop serving, it beats C4 Original in every category. C4 Ultimate lands on 7.6/10 overall and C4 Original lands on 5.3/10.
The gap is biggest on performance and pumps. Ultimate packs a much larger dose of the ingredients that matter for both, and adds an electrolyte panel that Original doesn't have at all.
There's one twist. C4 Original is a light formula at one scoop, but if you double up to two scoops it climbs to 8.0/10, which is right around where Ultimate sits at one scoop. The catch is that two scoops means 400mg of caffeine, a very big dose.
Honest take: C4 Ultimate is the stronger, better-balanced formula for most people. C4 Original is the lighter, cheaper entry point.
C4 has been reformulated several times, so "C4 Original" on a shelf can mean quite different formulas. This comparison covers the current 5th Generation C4 Original (launched in 2024) against the 5th Generation C4 Ultimate.

Retailers and third-party sites sometimes still show the old formula's numbers, so always check the label on the tub you're actually buying.

Check your tub's label for the maximum number of scoops it recommends. Some regional labels cap C4 Original at one scoop per day, so the two-scoop column is there to show what the formula can do, not to tell you what to take.
C4 Original: 6.2/10 · C4 Ultimate: 8.2/10
C4 Original gives you 200mg of caffeine, which is roughly two cups of coffee. C4 Ultimate gives you 300mg, closer to three cups. That extra 100mg is most of the energy gap.
Ultimate also adds two smaller stimulants that work alongside caffeine, Dynamine (50mg) and TeaCrine (10mg). They're meant to smooth out the energy curve rather than hit you with one big spike. At these amounts they're a nice bonus rather than a game-changer, and the tyrosine adds a little more on top.
What it'll feel like: Original is a clean, moderate kick. Ultimate is noticeably stronger, with more drive right from the start of your session.
Honest take: Ultimate is clearly the stronger kick. Original is the easier one to tolerate.
C4 Original: 4.2/10 · C4 Ultimate: 6.3/10
Focus is the weakest area for both, but Ultimate is clearly ahead.
Beyond that, both formulas lean mostly on caffeine for focus, and Ultimate simply has more of it.
Honest take: Ultimate for focus, though neither is a focus formula. Original's focus is mostly just caffeine.
C4 Original: 5.7/10 · C4 Ultimate: 7.9/10
This is where the gap really opens up. Ultimate has far more of the ingredients that drive blood flow into your muscles.
What it'll feel like: Original gives you a mild pump that you'll mostly notice on higher-rep work. Ultimate gives you a proper pump, with real fullness and vascularity during your session.
Honest take: Ultimate by a wide margin. Original needs two scoops to compete.
C4 Original: 5.0/10 · C4 Ultimate: 8.1/10
This is the biggest gap of the four categories.
What it'll feel like: Ultimate gives you more gas in the tank for longer sets, and with consistent use, more reps before you hit a wall. Original will take the edge off, but you won't feel a big difference in your lifting.
Honest take: Ultimate wins this one easily. Original is light for the "performance" part of pre-workout.
Neither C4 Original nor C4 Ultimate is sold as NSF Certified for Sport. Cellucor's NSF certification is on C4 Sport instead, so if you're a tested athlete, look at that one.
Both are stimulant formulas with beta-alanine, so the side effects overlap. The difference is how strong they are.
Tingles and pins and needles. C4 Ultimate contains 3200mg of beta-alanine, which is a genuinely high single dose, so expect strong tingling across your face, neck and hands starting around 15 minutes in and fading within the hour. C4 Original contains 2000mg, enough that most people will still notice real tingling, but it's milder. It's harmless in both cases and it isn't a sign the product is working harder. Smaller people tend to feel it more at the same dose. Taking it with food or using less than a full scoop takes the edge off.
Jitters and a racing heart. C4 Original has 200mg of caffeine and C4 Ultimate has 300mg. In this range, jitteriness and a wired, restless feeling are the most common complaints, especially if you don't drink caffeine regularly or you take it on an empty stomach. If you double C4 Original to two scoops, you're at 400mg, which is a genuinely high dose that can bring on real anxiety symptoms in people who are sensitive to it. If caffeine has always hit you harder than it seems to hit other people, you may be a slow caffeine metabolizer, and the same dose will hit harder and last longer for you. Start with half a scoop the first time.
Stomach upset. Both formulas contain plain L-arginine, which is more prone to causing cramping or loose stools than citrulline. C4 Ultimate has 3000mg and C4 Original has 1200mg, so Ultimate is the one more likely to bother a sensitive stomach. Mixing it into more water and drinking it slowly helps.
Sleep. Give yourself at least 6 to 8 hours before bed with Original, and 8 to 10 hours with Ultimate.

|---|---|---|---|
| Price per tub | $34.99 | $34.99 | $39.99 |
| Servings per tub | 30 | 15 | 20 |
| Price per serving | $1.17 | $2.33 | $2.00 |
| Cost per score point | $0.22 | $0.29 | $0.26 |
The tubs cost close to the same, only $5.00 apart. Where they differ is how far each tub goes.
At one scoop, C4 Original is cheaper per serving and also cheaper per point of score. But that's because you're getting a lighter product. If you need two scoops to get a full-strength effect, you're paying more per serving than Ultimate, with more caffeine and a slightly weaker pump.
Honest take: Original is the better value only if a light one-scoop pre-workout is all you need. Anyone chasing a full-strength effect gets more for their money from Ultimate.
