Bucked Up vs BUM Essential: Which Pre-Workout Is Actually Better?

We compared Bucked Up and BUM Essential on energy, focus, pumps and performance. See the scores, doses, price and who each pre-workout suits.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential: Which Pre-Workout Is Actually Better?

Bucked Up is one of the best-known pre-workouts in the US. BUM Essential is Chris "CBum" Bumstead's budget-friendly pre-workout from RAW Nutrition. They both come with the same amount of caffeine, they both skip creatine, and they sit in the same "moderate stimulant" lane. So which one should you actually spend your money on?

We went through both formulas ingredient by ingredient and scored them on energy, focus, pumps and performance. Here's how they compare.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential: The Short Answer

BUM Essential is the better pre-workout. It scores higher than Bucked Up in all four categories, and it costs less. Bucked Up lands on 5.3/10 overall and BUM Essential lands on 6.1/10.

The biggest gap is focus. BUM Essential has a proper dose of tyrosine for staying sharp under pressure, while Bucked Up's focus ingredient is dosed well below what research uses. The pump and performance gaps are smaller, but they go BUM Essential's way too.

And it's cheaper: BUM Essential costs $15.00 less per tub.

Honest take: BUM Essential is the better buy for almost everyone. Bucked Up is mostly a brand and convenience pick.

Quick note: this comparison is for the standard BUM Essential pre-workout, not the separate "Essential Charged" version.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential: Energy

Bucked Up: 6.2/10 · BUM Essential: 6.6/10

This one is close to a tie. Both formulas give you 200mg of caffeine, which is roughly two cups of coffee. That's a solid, noticeable kick without being the kind of dose that has most people shaking. Expect to feel it within about 15 to 45 minutes, and for it to carry you through a normal training session.

BUM Essential edges ahead because the tyrosine in it gives a small extra lift on top of the caffeine. It's a minor bonus rather than a different experience.

Honest take: a near-tie. Same caffeine, same moderate kick.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential: Focus

Bucked Up: 3.9/10 · BUM Essential: 5.3/10

This is where the two formulas really split.

  • Tyrosine (2,000 mg) in BUM Essential: helps your brain keep making the chemicals tied to alertness and staying sharp when you're pushing hard. This is a proper working dose, and it's the main reason BUM Essential feels more "locked in" on paper.
  • AlphaSize (200 mg) in Bucked Up: a branded form of Alpha-GPC, a choline source linked to focus and the mind-muscle connection. The catch is the amount. Research uses 300–600 mg, so this is a small sprinkle of the real thing.

Beyond that, both lean on caffeine for their focus. With Bucked Up, caffeine is doing nearly all the work. With BUM Essential, it has some help.

Honest take: BUM Essential is clearly better for focus. Bucked Up's focus is mostly just caffeine.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential: Pumps

Bucked Up: 5.8/10 · BUM Essential: 6.4/10

Here's a twist: Bucked Up has more of the main pump ingredient, but it still scores lower.

  • Citrulline in Bucked Up (6,000 mg) and BUM Essential (4,000 mg): citrulline helps your body make more nitric oxide, which opens up blood vessels and sends more blood to your muscles. Both formulas have enough to get the full pump benefit from this ingredient in our scoring, so Bucked Up's extra citrulline doesn't earn it a higher score.
  • Taurine (1,000 mg) in BUM Essential: helps draw fluid into your muscle cells, which adds to that full, tight feeling. Bucked Up doesn't have it.
  • Sodium (75 mg) in BUM Essential: helps your body hold on to the fluid. Bucked Up lists 100 mg of Himalayan rock salt, but that's the weight of the salt, and less than half of it is actual sodium, so it adds very little.

So the gap isn't about citrulline. It's about BUM Essential having a couple of extra pieces that help your muscles hold the fluid.

What it'll feel like: both will give you a decent pump during your session, with BUM Essential a little fuller and Bucked Up a little flatter.

Honest take: a modest win for BUM Essential. Neither is a pump monster.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential: Strength and Performance

Bucked Up: 5.5/10 · BUM Essential: 6.0/10

  • Beta-alanine (3,200 mg in BUM Essential, 2,000 mg in Bucked Up): helps your muscles handle the burn during hard sets, and it's also what causes the tingly feeling. It works best when you take it consistently, and research uses 3.2–4.5 g a day for the full effect. BUM Essential gets a lot closer to that than Bucked Up does, though neither fully gets there.
  • Taurine (1,000 mg) in BUM Essential: supports hydration and helps your muscles keep going when you're tired.
  • Citrulline and caffeine in both formulas help with blood flow and drive, so they're covered about equally.

Neither formula has creatine, which is the one ingredient most lifters would want for strength. If you want that, you'll need to add it separately. Creatine works best as an every-day supplement anyway, not just before training.

Honest take: BUM Essential has the edge, mostly from the extra beta-alanine. Neither one is going to transform your lifts.

Notable Features: What Makes Bucked Up and BUM Essential Different

Bucked Up

  • Deer Antler Velvet (50 mg): this is the headline ingredient on the label, but human studies haven't shown it improves training performance, and this is a very small amount. Don't pay extra for it.
  • AstraGin (25 mg): an absorption helper meant to get more of the other ingredients into your system. A nice touch, though it's not something you'd notice in the gym.
  • Easy to find: Bucked Up is sold in big retail stores like Target and the Vitamin Shoppe, so you can pick it up the same day.
  • Quality testing: Bucked Up points to GMP manufacturing and label transparency rather than a third-party banned-substance certification for its original formula.
  • Smaller scoop: 1 Scoop (12g), versus 1 Scoop (14.4g) for BUM Essential.

BUM Essential

  • Backed by CBum: it's Chris Bumstead's pre-workout, so it comes with a lot of name recognition in the bodybuilding world.
  • Priced to be accessible: BUM Essential is the cheaper tub, and it's the one that scores higher.
  • A real dose of tyrosine: this is what drives its edge on focus.
  • Electrolytes on the label: sodium is listed, which helps with fluid balance and pumps.
  • Informed Sport testing: RAW Nutrition says every lot is tested through Informed Sport, a program that screens products for substances banned in sport. If you're a tested athlete, check your specific batch on the Informed Sport website before relying on it.
  • Plenty of flavors: Orange, Grape, Blue Raspberry and Raspberry Creamthickle are among them.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential Side Effects

Both are moderate-stimulant formulas, so the side effects are similar. The main difference is the tingles.

Tingles and pins and needles. Bucked Up contains 2,000 mg of beta-alanine, enough that most people will notice real tingling across the face, neck and hands, starting around 15 minutes in and fading within the hour. BUM Essential contains 3,200 mg, which is a genuinely high single dose, so expect it to be stronger. It's harmless in both cases, and it isn't a sign the product is working harder. Smaller people tend to feel it more at the same dose. If you hate the sensation, taking it with food or using half a scoop takes the edge off.

Jitters and a racing heart. Both formulas contain 200mg of caffeine. At this level, jitteriness and a wired, restless feeling are the most common complaints, especially if you don't drink caffeine regularly or you take it on an empty stomach. If you've always been sensitive to caffeine, you may be one of the people who process it slowly, so the same dose hits harder and lasts longer for you. Start with half a scoop the first time. BUM Essential's own directions suggest the same thing.

Sleep. Two cups of coffee's worth of caffeine can hang around for hours. Give yourself at least 6 to 8 hours before bed.

Neither formula contains the ingredients most linked to stomach upset, like plain arginine or very large creatine doses, so that's not a big concern with either one.

Bucked Up vs BUM Essential Price: Which Is Better Value?

Bucked UpBUM Essential
Price per tub$44.99$29.99
Servings per tub3030
Price per serving$1.50$1.00
Cost per score point$0.28$0.16

This is the easiest part of the comparison. BUM Essential is cheaper per serving, and it scores higher, so the cost per point is lower too. You're not trading quality for savings here. You get both.

Honest take: BUM Essential is the clear value pick. Bucked Up costs more for a weaker formula.

Should You Buy Bucked Up or BUM Essential?

Choose BUM Essential if:

  • You want the better formula overall. It wins on energy, focus, pumps and performance.
  • Focus matters to you, whether that's the gym, a long day, or both.
  • You're on a budget and want the most for your money.
  • You're a tested athlete and want a formula whose maker says it's Informed Sport tested (confirm your batch first).

Looking for creatine in your pre-workout? Neither has it. You'll want to take it separately.
